There are more than 400,000 types of flowers worldwide. Unfortunately, not all of them can do well everywhere they’re planted. This is because flowering plants flourish in slightly different conditions. Most of them also have particular blooming seasons. Seasonal flowers are those that naturally bloom within a window of time in a given locale. Note that it’s possible to extend that window with artificial climate controls such as heated greenhouses.

The term ‘seasonal flowers’ may also be used to refer to flowers that aren’t available in the global flower market. Out-of-season flowers, when sold in areas that you wouldn’t normally grow them, come at high costs.

Signature seasonal flowers and their color in every season

People like using flowers to decorate their homes or wedding venues. But not all the flowers are available all year round because seasons come and go whether or not we want them to. Different flowers bloom naturally in different periods which means that then, these flowers will be easier to find and much more affordable. If you like to use flowers aesthetically and are not sure about the availability of a certain seasonal bloom, it’s best to talk to a florist in your area.

  • Spring

Spring is the prime time of growth and renewal for plant and animal life and most flowering plants bloom during this time. Springtime in the Northern hemisphere is between March-May and between September-November in the Southern hemisphere. Therefore, spring flowers bloom at different times in the two hemispheres.

The flowers that bloom only in spring include the Roses, Dahlia, Calla lily, Daffodil, Peach & Cherry blossom, Lilac, Poppy, Viburnum, Orchid, Freesia, Daisies, Hyacinth, Iris, Star of Bethlehem, Crocus, Phlox, Tulip, Sweet pea, Azaleas, and Zinnia.

  • Summer

Summer is the time for hot and warm weather. Floral growth is best during this season. The Northern hemisphere experiences summer during June, July, and August while the Southern hemisphere experiences it in December, January, and February.

It’s almost impossible to draw a clear line between spring and summer flowers because the two seasons seamlessly flow into each other. The most popular summer flower include the Hydrangea, Sunflower, Periwinkle, Stargazer, Carnation Chrysanthemum, Love-lies-bleeding flower, Cockscomb, Gladiolus, Roses, Yarrow, African Marigold, Cosmos, Zinnia, Iris, Petunias, and Bellflower.

  • Autumn

Autumn is the time of year that flower bloom cycles start to slow down. Early autumn is the period of harvest and beautiful leaves that change their color are at their best. The season falls between September-November in both the Northern hemisphere and Southern hemisphere.

Flowers that bloom in Autumn include the Asters, Colchicum, Toad lily, Helenium, Perennial Sunflower, Goldenrod, Red spider lily, Quince, Salvia, Pepper berry, Japanese Anemone, Gerbera Daisy, Rowen berry, and Juniper.

  • Winter

The weather during winter is very cold. During this time, flowers are a less common occurrence. The season occurs between December-February in the Northern hemisphere and between June-August in the Southern hemisphere.

The most popular flower is the Poinsettia which is closely associated with the Christmas period. Thanks to its vibrant red petals, the star-shaped blooms are nicknamed the “Christmas star.” Other winter flowers include the Amarylis, Pansy, Ginger, Holly berry, Winter Jasmine, Lily, Cyclamen, Violas, and Narcissus.

We hope that all beginning gardeners who are often overwhelmed with which flowers to grow have learned a thing or two about choosing the right flowers for each season.
